Andrew Bynum getting his big chance

Blogged under Need to Step up, Front Page by Nothing but Net on Tuesday 16 January 2007 at 3:54 pm

The Lakers really only need Bynum to rebound and play defense now that he’s starting due to the injuries to Kwame Brown and Chris Mihm. Whatever offense Bynum gives them will be a bonus, but he has some good skills on that side of the court so he may surprise some people with his output. Bynum has played in 37 games and is averaging 19.5 minutes, 7.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.7 blocks per game this season. If he can improve on those numbers with the added playing time the Lakers would be ecstatic. He’s shooting 57.1% from the floor, but most of those shots are putbacks or dunks so his % should stay high. He also is a good free throw shooter for his size, unlike Shaq, as he hits 72% from the line. Bynum could be a big building block for the Lakers future.

Lakers prevail in OT 124-118 over the Heat in Los Angeles

Blogged under Game Recaps, Front Page by Nothing but Net on Tuesday 16 January 2007 at 3:45 pm

The Lakers really played a great offensive game last night as Kobe had some help. Kobe wound up with 24 points, 4 rebounds and 8 assists. But the star of the show last night was Brian Cook who had an awesome game. Cook scored 25 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out 4 assists and blocked 3 shots! Smush Parker also did his part with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

The Lakers improved to 25-13 on the season with this win. http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=270115013

Lakers need more from their point guards

Blogged under Need to Step up, Front Page by Nothing but Net on Saturday 13 January 2007 at 9:12 pm

The Lakers don’t really have a traditional point guard as Kobe Bryant handles the ball alot. What that does mean is that the Lakers need their point guards to score points on a consistent basis. Smush Parker’s performance this season has been very sporadic, sometimes good (like last night) and sometimes really bad. Parker is averaging 29.9 minutes, 11.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game this season. He’s shooting decent this season as he’s hitting 45.4% of his FGs and 36.7% from 3-point range, so maybe he needs to shoot a little more until Lamar Odom returns.

Rookie Jordan Farmar has been doing a solid job as the back-up. In 17.3 minutes per game this season, he’s averaging 6.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists. He’s also shooting pretty well as he’s hit 48% of his shots from the floor.

The Lakers need these two guys to be a tad more selfish until Lamar Odom returns.

The Lakers improved to 24-13 on the season with this win. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=270112013
